Many popular graphic programs under Windows use vector graphics, which has many advantages over bitmap graphics such as arbitrary scaling and resolution independence of the final output device. The Windows native language for vector graphics is Windows Metafile Format (WMF), so called because WMF is basically a recording of instructions emitted by a program to the Windows graphic system (GDI) in order to display lines, boxes, text, and so on. The newer EMF format overcomes some drawbacks of the older WMF format.

On the other hand Adobe's PostScript format is a well established graphic format for both, vector and bitmap images. Originally designed as printer language PostScript (PS) and Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) have become an industry standard for both printing and graphics exchange. Unfortunately, programs often can't EPS-export at all, or it does not work sufficiently. Actually Windows can print to a vast number of PostScript-printers and is therefore capable of producing PostScript for vector and bitmap images. In addition to that you can redirect any printing to a file on your hard disk, so why is there a need for an additional program like WMF2EPS ??

Actually, Windows does the main job except for keeping the right bounding box. So, if you have many WMF graphics, you like to appear in Encapsulated PostScript-format with the same bounding box, which you can change if you like, WMF2EPS is the right program for you ! Especially if you use TeX/LaTeX for typesetting scientific/technical stuff under Windows, you will be faced with a vast number of good Windows applications, you can produce nice graphics on paper with, but you can't produce good EPS easily. WMF2EPS is intended to simplify the production of EPS graphics under Windows95/NT. Most applications use WMF (Windows Metafile format) or EMF (Enhanced Metafile format) for handling both vector and bitmap graphics.
